Gordon Wins the Appreciation of Fans

Jeff Gordon may have lost the first NASCAR Nextel Cup
title yesterday to Kurt Busch, but his hard work throughout the 2004 season, as
proven by his position as leader when calculated by the old points system, has
earned him the our Classic Cup fan appreciation award.

Many fans, like me, are still not convinced the Chase for
the Championship rewards the driver with the most successful season. Drivers and
their teams put in Herculean efforts to stay at or near the top month after month, and
that tenacity, perseverance and winning spirit is what we feel is the essence of a
champion.

Over 150 fans have offered their support for the award. Some may be fans of Gordon,
others may root for alternative drivers. The award is about more than playing
favorites. It’s about recognizing the efforts of a driver who, in past years, would have
emerged as a champion.

The award is a bright silver antique driving lantern, often used by cars traveling
distances late at night in the early 1900s. The lantern honors the traditions in
NASCAR, and the spirit of those who started the sport by holding impromptu races
while running moonshine.

Any fans still interested in participating may do so until December 1st, since the
lantern will be sent out for engraving to personalize it for Gordon. There is no cost,
and up to 200 fan names will be included on a certificate of appreciation sent to the
driver. Just send me an e-mail with your first and last name (will only be used for the
award).

Thanks everyone for a great year, and a big Thank You to Jeff Gordon for providing us
a season full of entertainment and thrills amidst the madness of the Chase, and for
going for broke at the end.
